Me quedé unos minutos anclado en el prólogo del propio traductor, y su pasión era tan desmedida, su felicidad por haber traducido del catalán tan sincera que, la verdad, me quedé un poco perplejo y decidí llevármelo a casa y dar una oportunidad al tal Pla.
¿Cómo alguien puede escribir así con 18 años? El Cuaderno gris es un dietario escrito por Josep Pla a la edad de 18 años cuando vuelve a su pueblo de Pallafrugell, porque han tenido que cerrar la Universidad de Barcelona donde estudia Derecho a causa de una fortísima epidemia de gripe, por aquellos tiempos (primeros años del siglo XX) epidemia mortal. Pla se aburre en su pueblo y decide ponerse a escribir. Lo hace con notable autocrítica, confesándose un inútil, criticándose con una dureza encomiable mientras sus padres le reprochan su desidia y su vagancia. Pla se reconoce un haragán, un desnortado, pero no suelta la pluma prácticamente ni un solo día durante muchos meses, en los que refleja de manera magistral, la vida en un pueblecito del Ampurdán. Y repito, poco después de empezar a leer y a lo largo de muchas de sus páginas, me quedaba mirando al techo y me preguntaba: ¿cómo alguien puede escribir así con 18 años? Evidentemente el manuscrito está corregido y seguramente alterado por el propio autor. Pero eso no le quita mérito en absoluto. La literatura de Josep Pla es sabia desde el inicio. De una pureza asombrosa, con una riqueza de imágenes que noquea. Las descripciones son precisas y a la vez de una belleza arrebatadora. Puede describir un puerto de mar de forma tan poética que tengas que leer los párrafos dos o más veces y no porque no lo entiendas, sino sencillamente para disfrutar como un loco con esa literatura. Es de una belleza portentosa y lo más insólito de todo es que en ningún momento roza, qué digo roza, ni se acerca a la cursilería en la que cualquiera caería al intentar dar rienda suelta a tanta sensibilidad. Pla describe los vientos (“el viento de garbí” que tan bien conoce y del que tanto habla), las playas, los caminos, el ambiente, las nubes, las flores, los árboles; y lo lees con la misma atención que si estuvieran absorto en una novela de aventuras, como si fueras un chaval y te encontraras por primera vez con las andanzas de Sandokán relatadas magistralmente por Salgari. Pero no, en El cuaderno gris se habla de cafés, de casas del pueblo, de paseos al atardecer, de cómo cambia el tiempo; de la gente, del frío, de la miseria y todo con una destreza, con una riqueza, con un poderío, que al leerlo asistes asombrado a una sinfonía literaria que te secuestra y anonada.
Pla con su boina y su impenitente cigarro, con su pinta de paleto, juega y jugará con las palabras a lo largo de su dilatada carrera literaria. Y se ríe para sí mismo con socarronería, provocando el asombro y a veces el desconcierto del lector. En su libro “Viaje en autobús” realiza esta descripción de una mirada:
“El sopor blanco de la luz lunar difumina un poco el caudal de fosforescencia y de pasión que contiene el amarillo negro de sus ojos: así y todo, el fuego es obsesionante. Y todo esto lo hace para ser agradable a una hembra invisible, situada a veces en la más remota lejanía.”
